The Common Core Standards are part of a national movement to ensure that children throughout the United States are getting good, consistent, fundamental education in English language arts and mathematics. Currently, states have different standards for what students should know and be able to do, and the difficulty of the tests used to measure student progress varies, too.
Common standards allow states to work together on teaching methods, materials, measurements, and teacher excellence. The overall goal ensures students can meet college and work expectations, are prepared to succeed in a global economy and society, and are provided with rigorous content and application of higher knowledge thinking.
California has adopted its own version of the Common Core Standards. State education leaders have designed the standards to achieve everything described above, and to assist students fulfill requirements for enrollment at a California public university.
