In this newsletter: Start of School, Kindergarten Orientation and Potluck, School Wide Supply Wish List, Welcome Back Coffee, Ice Cream Social, Join PTA, 2017-2018 Calendar
Start of School, Monday, August 21 - MINIMUM DAY
It's that time again! Summer camps are wrapping up and teachers are getting their rooms ready. School opens for business Monday, August 21, at 8:30AM. Please note that it is a minimum day, so grades K-6 will be dismissed at 2:05PM. (See the daily bell schedule if you're new to Fairmont: http://fairmontschool.org/daily-bell-schedule.)
Kindergarten Orientation and Potluck
For Kindergarteners, there will be an orientation at 2PM on Friday, August 18. This is a chance for you to ask questions of the Principal and of PTA members before school actually begins. You can also join us for the last of our kindergarten summer play dates, Saturday, August 19th, from 11:30AM -1:30PM on the Fairmont main playground, accessible from the Lexington cul-de-sac gate by the Fairmont Club House. Please let those with entering kindergarteners know about these events. These play dates are great chances for the kids to see their new school and get to know other kids coming to Fairmont.
School Wide Supply Wish List
In an effort to make sure that our upper grade teachers and students get access to just as many supplies as the lower grades, we have set up a school wide supply wish list. All you have to do is sign-up using the link below and either have the item shipped to the school or drop by the office with your donation before school starts. These items will be distributed to all the teachers on the Friday before school starts. http://signup.com/go/yPHqssQ.
Welcome Back Coffee Volunteers Needed
There will be a "Welcome Back" coffee in the multi-purpose room at 8:30 am on the first day of school, August 21st. Come mingle with other parents and enjoy some coffee and goodies. Donations of treats are welcome. Sign up to help: http://signup.com/go/grDUnra
Ice Cream Social Volunteers Needed
We will have our annual FREE Ice Cream Social on Tuesday, August 29 at 6:15pm. We need volunteers for lots of jobs and have created an online sign up form. So go to http://signup.com/login/entry/4370166808315740113 then click the job you'd like to help with! More details to come after school begins.
"Why should I join," you ask? Joining the PTA is a win-win for everyone. What is it that makes people happy? Money? Power? Fame? No, study after study tells us that the happiest and healthiest individuals are those that have great relationships and feel connected. There is not better place to make new friends and connections than the PTA! If that wasn't enough, studies also say that students whose parents are involved in their child's education are more successful in school. Without the PTA there would be no music program for your first grader, no fieldtrips, no theatre for your sixth grade student, no multicultural festival, no potlucks, no kindergarten playdates etc. We need you to help shape our school, our community and our children!
There will be tables at all our upcoming events so please stop by and join. You may also drop by the office for a sign-up form or you can join online: https://shop-fairmont.myschoolcentral.com/ptaez/(S(tsi3014yswl1cyicsk121vdv))/apps/webstore/pages/WebStore.aspx.
Here is a list of events we are planning to hold this year. WriterCoach Connection (WCC)
WriterCoach Connection (WCC) brings teams of trained volunteers into Lavonya DeJean Middle School; Kennedy High School and Richmond High School to provide one-on-one writing support to students on their classroom writing assignments. Volunteer coaches help students develop their ideas and strengthen their writing skills. WCC’s in-depth training provides the practices you’ll need to be a strong coach. Make a commitment of 2 hours during the school day two to four times per month and enjoy the satisfaction of helping students succeed. Volunteers must attend an orientation and then complete a 3-hour training workshop to become a coach. For more information and to register, please visit http://www.writercoachconnection.org/volunteer-orientation.html
