Last Day of School and Picnic

Good news, the days of "...you'll be late for school!" are almost at an end. June 7th is the last day of classes. School will be dismissed at NOON and then you have the entire summer to bond with your offspring. School will resume on August 20th.

If you are free on the 7th after dismissal, please join us a Cerrito Vista and bring a picnic lunch so we can all hang out in the park.

6th Grade Promotion

Sixth grade promotion will be June 7, from 10 am - noon in the Mulitpurpose Room. Light refreshments will be offered. Families are asked to donate snack, time, and/or money to help pay for yearbooks. We are also looking for some fifth grade parents to help during the reception to help pass out programs and set up the snack table. Please contact Lisa King at kinglisa915@gmail.com if you can assist or sign up to donate food/money or help decorate.

Thank you Hendrick!

Thank you to Hendrick Automative and Honda of El Cerrito. They recently donated $2,000 to the Fairmont Student Council. Student council is planning to spend the funds for campus beautification.

Summer Reading

Keep your child's reading skills sharp by encouraging them to read all summer long. Stave off the "summer slide" by offering your student a variety of books to read and allowing them to choose books which interest them. Stop by the Fairmont Book Exchange to pick up something new to read over the summer. Have books you are ready to pass on to another eager student? Please drop them off at the exchange located in the lower grade building (across from room 3).

In addition, check out the summer reading program offered through the El Cerrito Library, "Reading Takes You Everywhere". The program runs June 4th-August 4th. Win prizes and promote family reading. There is even a suggested adult reading list so model healthy reading habits for your child by promoting family reading. http://ccclib.org/reads/summerreading/.

Kindergarten Playdates and Orientation

We will be kicking off the summer with a playdate at the beginning of summer to allow people to network early on. Don't worry if you already have plans to go somewhere, there will be playdates in August as well. The first playdate will be at Cerrito Vista Park. All August playdates will be at Fairmont.

Saturday, June 9th 10am-noon (CERRITO VISTA PARK)

Sunday, August 5th  10am-noon

Sunday, August 12th  potluck 11:30-1pm. If you have food restrictions or don't like potlucks, please feel free to just bring a lunch for yourself and your child(ren).

Friday, August 17th, Orientation starts at 2pm. There will be a playdate for about an hour after orientation. This will give children the opportunity to meet their teacher and see their classroom as well as getting to know some of the friends they will have in their classroom. If you have any questions please feel free to email April: aprilparekh@gmail.com

New Changes Coming to the FASEP Program

The PTA would like to thank everyone who participated in filling out our survey about the current FASEP program. The huge response rate showed how much parents & students were interested in providing feedback on how the program was doing, what was working and what could be improved.

One of the biggest feedback responses we received, was the request for there to be more variety of classes offered. Although we’ve had a great relationship with the East Bay Center for Performing Arts, we have unfortunately not been able to offer the types of classes that parents have asked for through this organization.

Because of this and some other factors, we are excited to announce that beginning in the new school year, the Fairmont PTA will be partnering with the El Cerrito Recreation Department to run our FASEP program.

The El Cerrito Recreation Department will enable us to pick from classes such as: Fun Environmental Science, Cooking Around the World, Dancing Around the World, Karate, Beginning Spanish, Soccer Development & Circus Arts just to name a few.  In addition, Lisa di Prima’s Visual Art class and Chess class through the Berkeley Chess Club (Coach Doyle) will still be offered through FASEP.

The El Cerrito Recreation Center will also offer:

  • Full website with online registration & course descriptions
  • All classes taught onsite at the Fairmont School campus
  • A scholarship called the “David Hunter Memorial Scholarship for families that qualify. Look for a copy of the scholarship application to be sent home this week. The scholarship allows $150 per student per year to be used for classes. Note: in addition to this, the PTA has set up a separate FASEP scholarship fund so that we can cover 75% of the tuition costs.
  • Increased participation with FASEP from the City’s After School program.

Stay Tuned for more information about classes in the new school year and thanks for supporting the FASEP program!
