Two Fourth Graders Face-off in 2018 Spelling Bee
Wednesday last week, twenty of Fairmont’s top spellers in grades 4, 5 and 6 took the stage in Fairmont’s annual Spelling Bee. Students in the packed multipurpose room could barely contain their excitement as the older students fell, leaving two fourth graders—first timers to the spelling contest—remaining in the championship rounds.
In the end, Gloria O. outlasted runner-up Andrew Y. by successfully spelling the word “sphinx”. The contest starts with the Scripps National Spelling Bee list of 450 words for grades 4 through 9. Students can start studying as early as October, if so inclined. For the day of the school bee, our randomly selected list included words as diverse as “musician” and “miracle", which everyone knows; to more difficult (and less common) words like “sinewy” (meaning tendinous), “merengue” (a type of ballroom dance), “atoll” (a ring island formed by corals), and “reprobate” (to disapprove of); and finally to difficult and tricky words such as “pièce de résistance” (a showpiece of a collection) and “generalissimo” (a grand marshal over several military branches).
Gloria now has the opportunity to compete in the County Spelling Bee on March 24 in Walnut Creek sponsored by the East Bay Times. The winner of that contest continues on and has the chance to compete in the National Bee in May.
Congratulations to Gloria, Andrew, and all of our spelling bee contestants. And kudos to all of Fairmont’s students for their hard work learning spelling words for the Spell-a-thon and for the Spelling Bee!
We are happy to report that the board voted to make the architects bill their time to a different fund (Fund 40, Capital Project Outlay) for the share of the work for 6500 Stockton (Senior Center). This plants our flag firmly in the ground to establish 6500 Stockton as a capital project outside the bond allocation. Each of the board members was on point in their remarks, and more than one referenced the comments they got from "the Fairmont community". THANK YOU.
If you have time in the next couple of days, it is always nice to shoot them a quick note thanking them for their action supporting Fairmont and our kids.
If you want to watch and hear the comments, it starts at 4:14 and ends around 4:20. WCCUSD Board of Education Meeting (click Feb 17th).
